Instructions for use
Marineflex is a one-part, high performance, high strength, moisture curing polyurethane sealant and structural adhesive. It has excellent adhesion to most common surfaces including but not limited to; concrete, steel, glass, aluminium, timber, plastics, polycarbonates, acrylics, brick, GRP (glass reinforced plastic), marine-ply, metals and it can be painted over.
General Information
Marinflex has a movement accommodation factor (MAF) of 30%.
The sealant can be applied into joints ranging from 6mm to 40mm wide and 6mm to 25mm deep.
In general, the joint slot should be designed to ensure that the sealant width to depth ratio is 2:1.
Where joints are subjected to traffic a width to depth ratio of 1:1 should designed.
When used as an adhesive, ensure the whole surface is covered (buttered) and do not squeeze out all material when bringing surfaces together.
Minimise ‘open’ time.
Surface Preparation
Ensure that all surfaces are clean, dry, sound and free from frost. Clean all joints of release agents, water repellents, laitance, dust, dirt, old sealants or other contaminants which could impair adhesion.
Teak and similar timbers require degreasing and priming.
GRP should be abraded for maximum adhesion.
For critical situations and continual immersion prime substrates
All surfaces should be cleaned and degreased.
Priming
Marineflex exhibits goods primerless adhesion to most common construction substrates.
However, due to the natural variability of porous materials such as concrete and natural stones, Trade Sealants Ltd recommends the user carries out an adhesion test prior to commencing any application of Marineflex. This will confirm optimum adhesion of Marineflex to the applicable surfaces.
Priming the surfaces is essential for water retaining structure applications.
Primer 160 is designed for surface priming.
Application
Cut conical tip off of the cartridge end, screw on nozzle provided cut at 45º to required size and place into a cartridge gun. Once setup is complete, firmly extrude into joint slot or against the substrate.
Finishing
The sealant should be firmly tooled shortly after application to ensure good contact with joint substrates.
Painting
Marineflex may be painted over with water based paints, however due to the large range of paints available it is advised to carry out an initial compatibility test prior to final application.
